This democratic process is taking place in compliance with the Special Jurisdiction for Community Justice of Peace Law, approved by the National Assembly (AN) in November.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) reported that 100 percent of the polling stations have been set up across 4,862 voting centers throughout the country. The election will take place from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and voters aged 15 and older are eligible to participate.
During this democratic process, 15,000 main peace judges and their respective substitutes will be elected from among 52,288 citizens who registered as candidates. Each voter may cast their ballot for up to three candidates.
Community peace judges will act as mediators in matters that do not require the intervention of ordinary judges, such as family disputes, neighborhood conflicts, or minor issues. Their goal is to promote reconciliation, peace, and prevent violence within communities.
More specifically, according to the Special Jurisdiction for Community Justice of Peace Law, the main functions of peace judges are the following:
1.- To mediate in controversies or conflicts within the community, through arbitration of conciliation and equity;
2.- To preserve harmony in family relations, neighborhood and community coexistence.
3.- To resolve matters arising from the actions of the agencies and organizations of the People’s Power; and
4.- To focus on general problems of the community and on an individual basis with each citizen.
